Tools for a startup - Part 1

One of the guys asked me when I was developing geekevaluation as to why I chose java.
I told him because I chose java because I know java.
Even if there was something which was better ,I would not develop the application in a new language or platform because I want to work on my business plan , not learning new skill.
There is your first tool
1. Start your product development with the tools and technology you are comfortable with. Remember the idea here is to get a product which should validate your business idea, not your technical skills.

I also prefer Java because the power it gives in terms of open source. There are so many tools , servers , IDE free of cost to help you get started.
What a beautiful thing software development is .
Can you imagine where you can start your business by not spending a penny ?

2. Source control options

I would imagine that you are a bunch of guys who are working together at different locations.
You could also have outsourced project to some small company and now you want to manage source code where all of you could do check in/chek out

I looked around a couple of one
a) CVS dude is a popular options these days
iF you prefer to use SVN over CVS
A) code spaces
b) unfuddle is also a good choice.

For me was to keep the cost at minimum so I looked at code spaces and unfuddle.
Had some issues with code spaces repository when working with eclipse after 6-8 months so then went for unfuddle.

3. Online meetings
Another important tool to hold weekly meetings
I am using dimdim for now which is free for 5 users. Very happy with the quality so far.
another tool suggested by one of the friends was
Mikogo

I will cover hosting options in next post

How do I fnd the next killer idea ?

"I want to develop a site" a friend of mine confessed to me.
"That's Great" I said.
"But I do not know what should be the area in which I should develop"
"Oh ..." I said
"I was thinking of some killer idea , but could come up with none. Do you have any such idea "
"If I would have such idea , why should I give you it you " I smiled and said .
"Yeah .."

All of us try to find some killer idea. What could be that next application which could be google or facebook.
Unfortunately most of us do not find any such idea.
Some people take the same idea and customize it according to a region.
I have seen lot of people doing that in India and in some cases that seems to have worked well.

There is no point spending years in finding that killer idea. My perspective is that find something which exists and see if you can provide a better service at lower cost.

You may end changing your business model or tweaking but it is fine as long as it generates revenue.

I have developed geekevaluation while I was thinking about assessment solutions and realized that there is scope of improvement in the existing products.

The biggest drawback in the existing sites was that they did not allow mix and match of various topics. In technical world it is very difficult to judge a candidate on one topic.

The skills are a combination of multiple subjects and he or she should be evaluated on all of the topics

I will write more on this later..

Thanks Mr Buffet!!

Y'day Warren Buffet admitted that he did some dumb things in investing in year 2008.
Warren Buffets's letter

Glad to hear that I was not the only one to have lost money. At least I gained my senses in 2008 and did not invest last year. And if the guru of investing admits that he made some mistakes, what are we ....

Well I found that most of the people , when I say most it is 95% of people I know have lost their investment in some form or other. Either through real estate bad investments, stocks, mutual funds, 401k or lost the job.
This economic turmoil had its impact on most of us in one way or the other. It is not the time to sit back and think .."Oh I wish I had not taken that stock " or "i wish I had bought that house little late".

It is time ot realize that we should not follow the crowd and let greed overcome the senses.

Relax, re skill your selves and let us prepare for another boom which may start may be 2 year, 3 years from now .

Cheers!!!
